SRT (Single Rope Technique) Training – Grampian Speleological Group

Location: Elphin Caving Hut

Cost: Free of charge
Max Group Size: 4 trainees per course

Course Details:
This is a basic SRT course, open to beginners or those wanting a refresher.
Training will take place over 3 days and cover:  

Outline Schedule  

Day 1 (Late Afternoon / Evening):
Kitting up and safety checks
How to rig with Petzl Stop and hand jammer
Carabiner types and use (snap-gate, screw-gate, D, oval, HMS, maillons)
Rope properties: static vs dynamic, fall factors  

Day 2 (Morning):
Recap of Day 1
Traversing
Descending (correct use of Petzl Stop)
Ascending  

Day 2 (Afternoon):
Refresh and consolidation
Passing deviations and re-belays  

Day 2 (Evening):
Reverse prussicking
Changing direction (up/down transitions)
Passing a knot both directions  

Day 3: Practical trip to Rana Hole (Claonaite)
Descend and ascend entrance pitches to start of Skye-way(not to Black Rift)

Equipment Info:
SRT kits provided if needed (Petzl Stop, Croll Chest Ascender, Handled Jammer)
Bring your own gear if you prefer, but it must meet safety standards
Normal caving gear required for Rana Hole (oversuit, helmet, light, etc.)  

Accommodation at Elphin Hut:
Bring your own bedding, food, and drink
Standard GSG hut fees apply

Courses will be scheduled around existing hut bookings and cancelled in case of severe weather.
