Book the Club Hut

The Group runs a field hut in Elphin, Sutherland. It is ideally situated, in the middle of Scotland’s best caving area – Assynt.

​The Elphin Caving Centre (ECC) is a renovated and extended croft building in Elphin, 24 km north of Ullapool.

It has self-catering accommodation for 20 people, heating, toilets, hot showers, gas rings for cooking, a microwave oven, parking for eight cars, crockery, fridge, and comfy bunk beds. An additional asset is the superb view of Canisp, Suilven and Cul Mor from the conservatory – we would boast it’s the best view from any caving hut in the UK!

Note: Dogs are allowed subject to certain restrictions. Dogs should be mentioned in the booking request.

The ECC is to the right (east) of the main road just after the telephone box on the left when you are travelling north through Elphin.

Fees (per person)

  • Members: £5 per night
  • Guests from reciprocal rights caving clubs: £5 per night
  • Guests (from 1 Jan 2026): £15 per night (currently £12)

The same fee applies for sleeping in a camper van or tent. Reduced rates for children are available.

Booking Restrictions

  1. Non-members must belong to a formally constituted outdoor sporting club or society (e.g. BCA, Mountaineering Scotland) or be known to and vouched for by a current GSG member.
  2. Non-members may only book up to 15 places, as 5 places are always reserved for club members to visit on short notice.
  3. One- and two-person guest bookings will be booked for a minimum of two nights
  4. Release dates for bookings:
    • Bookings for each calendar year are open to GSG members on 1 October of the previous year
    • Jan-Mar guest bookings open 1 December of the previous year
    • Apr-Dec guest bookings open 1 January
  5. The Scottish Chief Constable requires owners of tourist accommodation to provide nationality information on guests. This is why our booking form asks non-UK nationals for their passport number, place of issue, and next destination

Rules

There are mandatory requirements regarding fire safety, waste disposal, and recycling. Full details are provided in our Hut Instructions, which you will receive prior to arrival. These strict rules must be complied with.
